Renewables

Every port in the Forth Ports network has experience in supporting customers in the renewables industry.

Forth Ports Scotland

In 2011, Port of Dundee and Port of Leith were identified as key assets in the National Renewables Infrastructure Plan (NRIP). The NRIP highlights these ports as hubs for the development of renewable energy in the coming years. Initial work funded by NRIP will maximise the use of existing port space and pave the way for future investment and expansion.

With opportunities within the offshore renewables sector continuing to grow, our ports have already signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs); evidence of Forth Ports’ valuable role in the future of the Scottish renewables industry.

Dundee

As well as being highlighted in the NRIP, Dundee benefits from falling within the Scottish Government’s Low Carbon Renewables East Enterprise Area.  Dundee offers renewable customers:

  • Purpose-built, heavy-lift, 200m quayside
  • Extensive storage areas, warehousing and deep-water berths
  • Development land suitable for construction of a manufacturing facility
  • Robust infrastructure to serve the emerging Offshore Renewable Wind Market.

Leith

The Scottish capital’s primary port is ideally located for all North Sea activities and has earned a reputation for its reliable service and high-quality facilities for offshore developments. In 2018, Leith acted as a sheltered lay-up and staging port for North Sea barges storing the large jacket structures for the Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm. Leith is in a strong capable and geographical position to support the offshore wind developments in Scotland.

Leith offers renewable customers:

  • Large usable areas both on ground and water
  • Space and facilities for specialised mobilisation and demobilisation
  • Two 55 tonne pipe gantry cranes
  • A purpose-built common user facility designed to accommodate two supply ships simultaneously.

Grangemouth

Grangemouth has extensive experience handling onshore wind turbine components through the port due to its ease of access and central location to Scotland’s motorway network. A heavy haulage specialist selected the port as its strategic depot in Scotland and successfully handled over 324 wind turbine components in its first year. From their purpose built quayside depot they utilise the port’s full service offering and excellent transport links.

Tilbury

In London, in addition to having expertise in handling and storage for the renewables industry we can offer customers:

  • Extensive storage areas, warehousing and yard storage
  • Deep berths for specialised vessels
  • Heavy-lift expertise and equipment to handle wind turbine pieces and other renewables equipment
  • Opportunities for developing a factory and pre assembly sites.

The Port of Tilbury itself has 4 wind turbines operating within the port; providing up to 84% of the port’s electricity.  Over the last 4 years the average has been 79%.
