- Safety: Comprehensive facilities for safe shipping movements
- Vessel Traffic System (VTS): Pilotage and navigational aids (lighthouses, shore marks, buoys)
- Forth & Tay Navigation Service (FTNS): Based in Grangemouth, provides 24/7 VHF radio and radar coverage, manned by qualified Assistant Harbour Masters and VTS Operators
- Enforcement: Byelaws and General Directions for Navigation to ensure safe and efficient passage of commercial and naval shipping

Ports of Tilbury and Tilbury2 Overview
Location: Lower Thames
Status: Largest ports on the river, independent Port Authorities with Statutory Harbour Authority (SHA) status
Management: Managed by Port of Tilbury, part of the Forth Ports Group
Tilbury Marine Department:
- Function: Ensures safe and efficient movement of shipping in dock and on tidal berths
- Tilbury Control: Manned 24/7 by a qualified Duty Harbour Master, Berthing Master, and Marine Operatives
- Services:
- VHF coverage and dock access through the ships lock
- Scheduling for all Tilbury and Tilbury2 berths
- Enforcement of regulations
- Provision of Port Services, including waste collection
This setup ensures the smooth and secure passage of all commercial vessels using the Ports of Tilbury and Tilbury2.
